Across South Asia and many traditional societies, one of the greatest sources of social confusion is the blurring of lines between regional culture (Rasm-o-Riwaj) and pure religious teachings (Deen). When cultural habits are treated as sacred obligations, religion is unfairly blamed for burdens it actually came to remove.
1. Where Religion Brings Ease, Custom Often Creates Burden
Consider marriage: Islamic teaching emphasizes simplicity, mutual consent, a respectful Mahr given to the bride, and avoiding financial hardship. Cultural custom, by contrast, frequently demands crushing dowries, multi-day lavish displays, and debt taken merely to satisfy "what people will say."
2. Women's Rights and Inheritance
Islam explicitly guaranteed women the right to education, property ownership, consent in marriage, and a fixed share in family inheritance over fourteen centuries ago. Yet deeply entrenched tribal or feudal customs often pressure women to forfeit their rightful share. Separating timeless divine principles from man-made social baggage is essential for a just society.

اسلام نے نکاح کو انتہائی سادہ، بابرکت اور آسان بنایا ہے، جبکہ ہمارے معاشرتی رسم و رواج نے جہیز، بے جا نمود و نمائش اور ’لوگ کیا کہیں گے‘ کے خوف سے نکاح کو غریب اور متوسط طبقے کے لیے ایک پہاڑ بنا دیا ہے۔
۲۔ خواتین کے حقوق اور وراثت
اسلام نے چودہ سو سال پہلے بیٹیوں اور خواتین کو وراثت میں واضح حصہ، تعلیم کا حق اور نکاح میں رضامندی کا مکمل اختیار دیا، لیکن جاگیردارانہ اور علاقائی رسم و رواج آج بھی کئی جگہوں پر بیٹیوں کو ان کے شرعی حق سے محروم رکھتے ہیں۔ ہمیں رسم و رواج کی زنجیروں اور دین کی روشن تعلیمات میں فرق سمجھنا ہوگا۔
