YouTube livestreams and comment sections are filled with endless sectarian and polemical debates, while basic virtues like honesty, prayer, and patience are neglected. What did the Prophet ﷺ warn about a people given to arguing?

Introduction: When Religion Becomes a Spectator Sport
Open YouTube, X (Twitter), or Facebook today, and you will find thousands of hours of heated religious livestreams bearing titles like *"Scholar X Destroys Opponent Y!"* or *"Live Debate Challenge!"* In the comment sections, young people spend until 3:00 AM hurling insults over secondary juristic differences—sometimes missing their own Fajr prayer in the process. Have we reduced the luminous guidance of Deen into an ego-driven debating tournament?
1. The Prophetic Warning Against Argumentativeness (*Jadal*)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explicitly warned that when a community abandons practical obedience and becomes obsessed with polemical arguing, its spiritual light fades. In a Hadith recorded in *Sunan al-Tirmidhi* (3253), the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
> *"No people go astray after having been upon guidance except that they are given to argumentation (Jadal)."* Then he recited the verse: *"They did not strike that example for you except for mere argument; rather, they are a quarrelsome people."* (Quran 43:58)
And in *Sunan Abi Dawud* (4800), the Prophet ﷺ gave a remarkable guarantee:
> *"I guarantee a house in the surroundings of Paradise for a man who avoids arguing even if he is in the right."*
2. How the Classical Imams Handled Disagreement (*Adab al-Ikhtilaf*)
The great Imams of Islam—Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Malik, Imam al-Shafi'i, and Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal—differed on hundreds of juristic branches (*Furu'*), yet they prayed behind one another and praised each other's piety. Imam al-Shafi'i said to Yunus al-Sadafi: *"O Abu Musa, is it not possible that we remain brothers even if we disagree on an issue?"*
They studied to **act upon the truth**, whereas online debaters often read just enough to **defeat an opponent** and boost their own ego.
3. Shifting From "Winning the Comment Section" to Winning the Hereafter
Before entering any religious debate online, ask yourself three questions:
1. Have I mastered my own obligatory prayers, honesty in business, kindness to parents, and control of my tongue?
2. Is this conversation actually going to soften hearts toward Allah, or will it only breed arrogance (*Kibr*) and hatred?
3. Am I defending the truth, or am I defending my own ego?
Conclusion
Deen was revealed to purify hearts, establish justice, and connect humanity with its Creator—not to generate clickbait debate highlights. Leave futile arguments behind, and let your character be your strongest proof.
