As Muslims, How Appropriate Is It to Celebrate Halloween? Is Wearing Costumes in the Name of a Trend Permissible?
In today's world, social media has made many practices popular without encouraging people to understand their origins, cultural significance, or compatibility with their own religious beliefs.
One such occasion is Halloween.
Every year on October 31, Halloween is observed in different parts of the world. People dress up as ghosts, witches, and frightening characters, decorate their homes with spooky objects, and participate in various celebrations. Today, many people view it as nothing more than entertainment or a social media trend rather than a religious occasion.
But this raises an important question: Does everything that becomes popular around the world automatically become acceptable for a Muslim?
What Is the Reality Behind Halloween?
Halloween has historical roots associated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which involved beliefs and traditions concerning the dead and supernatural forces. It was later influenced by Christian traditions. The word Halloween is derived from All Hallows' Eve.
Over time, it evolved into a popular cultural and commercial celebration involving costumes, frightening decorations, parties, and various activities.
What Does Islam Teach Us About Celebrations?
Islam does not only guide us in matters of worship; it also teaches us to preserve our religious identity and values.
When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ arrived in Madinah, the people there had two days of celebration. The Prophet ﷺ explained that Allah had replaced them with two better days for Muslims: Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha.
(Sunan Abi Dawood: 1134)
Another well-known saying of the Prophet ﷺ states:
Translation: Whoever imitates a people becomes one of them.
(Sunan Abi Dawood: 4031)
Based on this hadith, Islamic scholars caution against imitating the distinctive religious practices and celebrations of other communities.
Is Wearing Halloween Costumes Just Because of a Trend Acceptable?
Many people argue that they are only having fun, that they do not believe in any associated religious ideas, and that they are simply taking pictures with friends or following a social media trend.
But does calling something entertainment change the nature of the action itself?
When someone dresses up as a ghost, witch, or demonic character specifically for Halloween, attends Halloween parties, or creates content using the distinctive symbols of this celebration, it is no longer simply a matter of wearing an ordinary costume. It becomes participation in an activity associated with a particular celebration.
On this basis, numerous Islamic scholars consider participation in Halloween celebrations and its specific activities impermissible.
However, it is equally important to understand that committing a wrong action does not automatically take a Muslim outside the fold of Islam. It is not our responsibility to judge another person's faith. Our responsibility is to ensure that our own actions remain consistent with Islamic teachings.
Has Social Media Trends Become More Important Than Our Identity?
This is something that deserves serious reflection, particularly among younger generations.
Today, the popularity of something on social media often becomes the only reason people adopt it. We rarely stop to consider whether it aligns with our religious and cultural values.
Islam teaches us to treat people with kindness, respect their beliefs, and protect their rights. However, respecting others and participating in their religious celebrations are two different things.
We should also recognise the importance of our own traditions, culture, and Islamic celebrations.
A Final Question!
This article is not intended to create hatred towards any religion or community. Its purpose is simply to remind Muslims of their religious identity and responsibilities.
The world consists of different religions, cultures, and traditions. Everyone has the right to live according to their beliefs. However, as Muslims, we should also reflect on what we choose to adopt and why.
Is following every trend really necessary? Does something become right simply because everyone else is doing it?
Being a Muslim is not merely about carrying a religious name or identity; it is also about protecting our beliefs, principles, and way of life.
We should certainly move forward with the world, but not at the cost of leaving our religious identity behind.
Not every trend is meant for us, not everything popular deserves to be followed, and not every form of entertainment is necessarily appropriate for us.
Wallahu A'lam Bis-Sawab.
Halloween
Roman Urdu Article: As Muslims, HALLOWEEN manana Kahan Tak Durust Hai? Kya Sirf Trend Ke Naam Par Costume Pehnna Jaiz Hai?
Musalman Hone Ke Nate Halloween Manana Kahan Tak Durust Hai? Kya Sirf Trend Ke Naam Par Costume Pehnna Jaiz Hai?
Aaj ke daur mein social media ne hamari zindagi mein bohat si aisi cheezon ko aam kar diya hai jin ke baare mein hum aksar yeh sochne ki zehmat bhi nahi karte ke unka talluq kis tehzeeb se hai aur ek Musalman ki haisiyat se humein un mein kis had tak shareek hona chahiye.
Unhi cheezon mein se ek Halloween bhi hai.
31 October ko duniya ke mukhtalif hisson mein Halloween manaya jata hai. Is mauqe par log bhooton, chudailon aur khaufnaak kirdaron ke libaas pehante hain, gharon ko darauni cheezon se sajate hain aur mukhtalif taqreebat munaqid karte hain. Aaj bohat se log ise mazhab ke bajaye sirf tafreeh aur social media trend ke taur par dekhte hain.
Lekin sawal yeh hai ke kya har woh cheez jo duniya mein trend ban jaye, ek Musalman ke liye bhi qabil-e-qubool ho jati hai?
Halloween Ki Haqeeqat Kya Hai?
Baad mein is par Masihi riwayaat ka asar bhi para. Halloween ka lafz All Hallows' Eve se nikla hai.
Waqt ke saath yeh tehwar ek awami aur tijarati taqreeb ki shakal ikhtiyar kar gaya, jis mein makhsoos libaas, khaufnaak sajawat aur mukhtalif sargarmiyan shamil ho gayin.
Islam Tehwar Ke Baare Mein Kya Kehta Hai?
Islam humein sirf ibadaat hi nahi balki apni mazhabi shanakht aur tehzeeb ki hifazat karna bhi sikhata hai.
Rasool Allah ﷺ jab Madinah tashreef laaye to wahan ke logon ke do tehwar thay. Aap ﷺ ne farmaya ke Allah Ta'ala ne unke badle Musalmanon ko do behtar din ata kiye hain: Eid-ul-Fitr aur Eid-ul-Adha.
(Sunan Abi Dawood: 1134)
Isi tarah Rasool Allah ﷺ ka farmaan hai:
Tarjuma: Jo shakhs kisi qaum ki mushabihat ikhtiyar karta hai, woh unhi mein se hai.
(Sunan Abi Dawood: 4031)
Ulama is hadees ki roshni mein doosri aqwaam ke makhsoos mazhabi shaa'ir aur tehwar ki mushabihat ikhtiyar karne se mana karte hain.
Sirf Trend Ke Naam Par Costume Pehnna Kaisa Hai?
Aaj bohat se log kehte hain ke hum to sirf tafreeh kar rahe hain, humein kisi mazhabi aqeede se koi talluq nahi, hum sirf doston ke saath tasveerein bana rahe hain ya social media par trend follow kar rahe hain.
Lekin kya kisi amal ko tafreeh ka naam de dene se uski haqeeqat badal jati hai?
Agar کوئی شخص Halloween ki munasibat se bhoot, chudail ya shaitani kirdar ka libaas pehanta hai, Halloween party mein shareek hota hai ya isi tehwar ki makhsoos alamat ke saath videos aur tasveerein banata hai to yeh sirf aam libaas pehnne ka maamla nahi rehta, balki ek makhsoos tehwar ki sargarmi mein shirkat ban jata hai.
Isi bunyaad par muta'addid ulama Halloween ki taqreebat aur iski makhsoos sargarmiyon mein shirkat ko najaiz qarar dete hain.
Yeh bhi samajhna zaroori hai ke kisi Musalman se ghalat amal sarzad hone ka matlab yeh nahi ke use foran Islam se kharij qarar de diya jaye. Kisi ke imaan ka faisla karna hamara kaam nahi, albata apne aamaal ko Islami taleemat ke mutabiq rakhna hamari zimmedari hai.
Kya Social Media Ka Trend Hamari Shanakht Se Zyada Aham Hai?
Yeh hamare muashre aur khaas taur par naujawan nasal ke liye ghaur karne ka maqam hai.
Aaj kisi cheez ka social media par maqbool hona hi use apnane ki وجہ بن جاتا ہے۔ Hum aksar yeh nahi sochte ke iska hamari mazhabi aur muashrati aqdaar se koi talluq bhi hai ya nahi.
Doosron ke saath achha sulook karna, unke aqaaid ka ehtram karna aur unke huqooq ka khayal rakhna Islam ki taleemat hain. Lekin doosron ka ehtram karne aur unke mazhabi tehwar mein shareek hone ke darmiyan farq hai.
Humein apni tehzeeb, apni riwayaat aur apni Eidon ki ahmiyat ko bhi samajhna chahiye.
Aakhir Mein Ek Sawal!
Yeh tehreer kisi mazhab ya qaum ke khilaf nafrat paida karne ke liye nahi, balki apni deeni shanakht aur zimmedariyon ki yaad-dihani ke liye hai.
Duniya mein mukhtalif mazhab, tehzeebein aur riwayaat maujood hain.
Kya har trend ko follow karna zaroori hai? Kya sirf is liye kisi riwayat ka hissa ban jana durust hai ke aaj kal sab aisa kar rahe hain?
Musalman hona sirf ek naam ya shanakht ka maamla nahi, balki apne aqeede, usoolon aur tarz-e-zindagi ki hifazat karne ka naam bhi hai.
Humein duniya ke saath zaroor chalna chahiye, lekin apni deeni shanakht ko peechhe chhor kar nahi.
Har trend hamare liye nahi hota, har maqbool cheez qabil-e-taqleed nahi hoti aur har tafreeh zaroori nahi ke hamare liye durust bhi ho.
Wallahu A'lam Bis-Sawab.
