What is the difference between a Ghazal and a Nazm in Urdu poetry? In a Ghazal, every two-line couplet (Sher) is a complete, independent universe of meaning bound together by a shared meter, rhyme (Qafia), and refrain (Radif). In a Nazm, the entire poem revolves around a single unified theme and title that unfolds from beginning to end.

اردو شاعری کی دنیا میں ’غزل‘ اور ’نظم‘ دو ایسے ستون ہیں جن پر ہمارے پورے شعری ورثے کی عمارت کھڑی ہے۔ شاعری سے محبت رکھنے والے ہر قاری اور نئے شاعر کے لیے ان دونوں اصناف کا بنیادی فرق سمجھنا بے حد ضروری اور دلچسپ ہے۔
۱۔ غزل: ہر شعر ایک الگ اور مکمل کائنات
غزل کی سب سے بڑی خوبی اس کی ’ریزہ خیالی‘ اور جامعیت ہے۔ غزل کا ہر شعر (دو مصرعے) معنوی اعتبار سے اپنی جگہ ایک مکمل اکائی ہوتا ہے۔ ممکن ہے غزل کے پہلے شعر میں عشق کا ذکر ہو، دوسرے میں تصوف ہو اور تیسرے میں زمانے کا شکوہ—مگر فنی طور پر پوری غزل ایک ہی بحر، قافیے اور ردیف کی لڑی میں پروئی ہوئی ہوتی ہے۔ پہلا شعر ’مطلع‘ اور آخری شعر جس میں شاعر اپنا تخلص استعمال کرتا ہے ’مقطع‘ کہلاتا ہے۔
۲۔ نظم: ایک ہی مرکزی خیال کا منظم بہاؤ
نظم کے لغوی معنی ہی ’لڑی میں پرونا‘ یا ’ترتیب دینا‘ کے ہیں۔ غزل کے برعکس، نظم کا ایک مخصوص عنوان (Title) ہوتا ہے اور پوری نظم شروع سے آخر تک ایک ہی مرکزی موضوع کے گرد گھومتی ہے۔ چاہے وہ پابند نظم ہو، آزاد نظم ہو یا معریٰ نظم، اس کے تمام مصرعے مل کر ایک ہی تصویر مکمل کرتے ہیں۔
